They say, “necessity is the mother of invention”. Such was the case in bringing fiberglass railing to our beautiful Gulf Coast. My husband Charlie and I have lived in Pensacola Beach since 2004. In that time, we have watched metal surfaces in and around the exterior of our home become ravaged by our harsh, coastal environment. As we began construction of a new home this summer, we sought to find products that would withstand the elements and require little or no maintenance, while having beautiful aesthetic appeal. During a weekend looking at beach homes for design ideas, we stopped to ask a homeowner about their garage door. As we got closer to the home, we realized that the hand railing which appeared to be powder-coated aluminum was not a metal product. The homeowner shared that he had found a company in Washington state that supplies fiberglass railing. This railing, which looked brand new and adorned a home directly on the water, was actually three years old, and showed no signs of wear or corrosion. I contacted the company, received a quote for our home, and realized that if I had such a challenging time finding a maintenance-free alternative to powder-coated aluminum, certainly others have encountered the same frustration and would embrace this railing as well….and Coastal Fiberglass Railing was born. As natives of the Panhandle, Charlie and I have lived in the Pensacola area since 1989, and have owned Milton Truss Company since 2001. For the last 7 years, I was a volunteer and Director of the Trauma Intervention Program of Northwest Florida. This position allowed me to work alongside true heroes in our community: our hard-working men and women in law enforcement, fire, and emergency services. I had the opportunity to become friends with people of great integrity and work ethic. When we made the decision to develop a company and become a distributor of this product, we chose to develop a partnership with another Panhandle native with deep connections in the community. Dion Schleifer is a Sergeant with Santa Rosa Sheriff’s Office, and shares our enthusiasm and drive to market this company and help make fiberglass railing a game changer in the Gulf Coast residential and commercial market.
