Children's Harbor, Inc., founded by Ben and Luanne Russell in memory of Adelia M. Russell in 1987, is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to supporting seriously ill children and their families. Located on Lake Martin property provided by Russell Lands, the mission began with creating strengthening environments for children and has expanded to include two unique facilities: one at Benjamin Russell Hospital for Children in Birmingham, Alabama, and another at Lake Martin. The Birmingham campus offers services such as coaching, counseling, education, recreation, and respite through its Family Center, while the Lake Martin site partners annually with over 20 groups to provide retreats for long-term seriously ill children. Essential initiatives include tutoring, GED classes, career development, and preparation for adulthood provided at no cost to families. Children's Harbor operates without charging families due to generous contributions from donors and volunteers. It emphasizes core values of dignity, compassion, accountability, and community partnership. The organization, in its commitment to fostering family bonds and support systems during and after hospital stays, is guided by principles that ensure each action aligns with its vision, mission, and the well-being of those served.
