Residual herbicide chemicals are a threat to crop production. As a crop consultant, I have seen many cases of severe crop damage resulting from herbicide contamination and damage due to past applications on the soil as well as herbicide spray drift from neighboring fields.
There are many registered herbicides and the potential for crop injury varies according to the specific chemical (active ingredient) as well factors described on the product label including rotational crop restrictions, mixing and spray application, soil types, application rates, weather, etc.
Crop damage caused by residual herbicides is often blamed on other products including fertilizers and crop protection chemicals. When lawsuits ensue, an agronomy expert is required in order to determine the actual cause of the crop injury.
