Carter Technologies (CT) is solving problems for industry providing new Chemistries, Processes and Novel Products. R&D is centered on fundamental understanding of catalysts and catalytic processes based on computations solving problems at the molecular level using fundamental principles.
CT has developed patented economic catalytic chemistries for conversion of cellulose materials to ethanol (without fermentation, US Patent No. 7,816,568), conversion of ethanol to hydroxyaldehydes (US Pat No. 7,855,311) with subsequent conversion to gasoline using natural gas US Pat pending). In addition, ambient air oxidative destruction of gasoline, kerosene, diesel fuel and jet fuel in contaminated soils in just two weeks has been demonstrated (US Pat No. 6,563,006). This later discovery incorporates catalytic iron or other first row transition metal compounds where the active metal and directly attached atoms possess C4v, D4h, or D2d molecular point group symmetry. These catalysts were designed at the molecular level based on a formal theory of catalysis, and the catalysts were produced and tested to prove their activity. The theory of catalysts rests upon a requirement that a catalyst possess a molecular string or a single metal atom of symmetry such that transitions from one molecular electronic configuration to another be barrier free, so reactants may proceed directly to products as driven by thermodynamic considerations.
and sugars, including monosaccharides and disaccharides, have also been converted to ethanol at up to 99 percent efficiency in a few minutes. More than 13 billion gallons ethanol were produced in the year 2010 primarily by fermentation of corn in the United States of America and 22 billion gallons of ethanol were produced worldwide but the chemistry for economic conversion to consumer products including gasoline, heating oil, and polymers was not known.
CT has also developed catalytic chemistry for direct conversion of both ethanol and carbon dioxide to industrial chemicals such as gasoline, solvents and polymers demonstrating efficient use of all natural cellulosic and lignin carbon resources. These developments signal the dawning of a new age of green chemistry where natural, renewable resources can be farmed then the non-food materials converted to fuels and industrial chemical products instead of converting petroleum purchased from foreign merchants. These processes can displace petroleum, are efficient and reduce or nearly eliminate environmental waste leaving little for recycle.
