CAPTAINS FOR CLEAN WATER, INC., FORT MYERS

About Captains for Clean Water ABOUT CAPTAINS FOR CLEAN WATER Captains for Clean Water is a grassroots 501(c)3 nonprofit organization that advocates for the elimination of harmful, large-scale Lake Okeechobee discharges into the Caloosahatchee and St. Lucie River Estuaries by restoring the natural flow of Lake Okeechobee water south into the Everglades and Florida Bay. Restoring the natural southern flow of Lake Okeechobee water is essential to the survival of our estuaries, the health of the Everglades, and the long-term viability of South Florida’s largest drinking water source (the Biscayne Aquifer). Captains for Clean Water started out as a group of fishing guides from Fort Myers, FL that “had enough” of Florida’s poor water management practices. Given the destruction we have seen firsthand, we are convinced that Captains for Clean Water is not an organization exclusive to Captains, fishermen, or boaters. We broadcast our PSA’s on television, maximize our social media presence, and give presentations to clubs, organizations, etc. We are active in the legislative process at a local, state and federal level. CAPTAINS FOR CLEAN WATER FOUNDING STATEMENT Some land must be acquired in the EAA to treat and convey Lake Okeechobee water south to restore the natural flow of lake waters. Amendment 1 (2014), which passed with a 75% majority and is now a part of the Florida Constitution, specifically provides funding for these land purchases. Approximately 1.5 billion dollars in Amendment 1 funds have been spent by the legislature in 2015 and 2016 without any significant land acquisitions – or even specific land acquisition plans – south of Lake Okeechobee. We who depend on the water for our income are losing faith as we watch our estuaries die before our eyes. The only way we will be able to sleep at night is to know that we are acting to implement a real, long-term solution. CAPTAINS FOR CLEAN WATER – BOARD OF DIRECTORS Daniel Andrews is a full-time inshore fishing guide, born and raised in Southwest Florida. He fishes out of a flats boat for tarpon, snook, and redfish from Sanibel Island to Boca Grande. Daniel has witnessed the decline of the Caloosahatchee estuary growing up fishing these waters. He has spent tens of thousands of hours fishing and hunting across South Florida, in the Everglades, and in the Florida Keys. Passion for the outdoors is his driving force which keeps him fighting hard to protect the Everglades and estuaries that shape his way of life. Daniel founded Captains for Clean water to bring people together on an issue that has plagued South Florida for his entire life. Reid McKinstry is a Sales Manager at Mustad Hooks. Mustad Hooks is the oldest and largest fishing hook manufacturer in the world. Reid grew up in Fort Myers on the Caloosahatchee River fishing for snook, tarpon and redfish. Reid went to Virginia Tech and later graduated from Florida Gulf Coast University with BS in Business Management. Reid is an avid hunter and angler, and having seen the destruction caused by the damming and draining of the Everglades, and is fully committed to growing Captains for Clean Water into a powerful organization to fight for clean water for generations to come. Preston “PJ” Scheiner practices law as a trial attorney with Associates & Bruce L. Scheiner, Attorneys for the Injured. PJ received his undergraduate degree from Amherst College and attended law school at the University of Miami, where he graduated cum laude. As an attorney, PJ is a regular speaker and lecturer at legal conferences and seminars and has been recognized as a Rising Star by Superlawyers. PJ is also an avid diver, fisherman, and outdoorsman who has witnessed the devastating economic and environmental impacts of repeated, large-scale Lake Okeechobee discharges into the Caloosahatchee Estuary. PJ joined Captains for Clean Water out of a desire to do something to help save Florida’s natural beauty and bounty for future generations. Leland Eric Garvin, a Florida native, and second generation trial attorney began his legal career working as a State Prosecutor until he and his father decided to join forces to create the Garvin Law Firm, a personal injury trial firm in Southwest Florida. Leland is an avid fisherman, and diver who spends countless hours on the water, both in Southwest Florida and the Florida Keys; having witnessed firsthand the catastrophic impact of the Lake Okeechobee discharges as well as the lack of flow into hyper-saline Florida Bay. After studying this problem for years, Leland decided to join with other board members informing Captains for Clean Water in an attempt to have a positive impact on all estuaries in South Florida which he believes is on “Life Support” due to poor management at the State and Federal Levels. Chauncey Goss is the founder and managing partner of Goss Practical Solutions – a firm that provides federal fiscal policy analysis, budget forecasting, and geopolitical analysis. Prior to starting the firm, Goss served as Deputy Staff Director and Director of Budget Review for the House Budget Committee under Paul Ryan.
