In 1958, when our founder Alan Horwitz observed a crowd of students waiting in line for housing at the University of Pennsylvania, his entrepreneurial spirit ignited and Campus Apartments was born. Recognizing that most landlords in the area were undermanaging their properties, he decided to ‘professionalize the business’ and differentiate his product by offering a higher standard of living that not only appealed to students, but their parents as well. Over the next several decades, Mr. Horwitz went on to transform the landscape of Philadelphia’s University City neighborhood. In the mid-90s, a new entrepreneurial spirit was infused into the Company, as the leadership team set its focus on expanding the Company's holdings to other college and university markets. Over the next decade, Campus Apartments helped to "institutionalize" the student housing sector, successfully growing its footprint through creative deal structures and innovative public private partnerships. Today, Campus Apartments has grown into one of the nation’s largest providers of student housing and one of our industry’s most trusted and respected names. We continue to redefine the college living experience, and credit our founder for crafting our student-focused management style and sowing the seeds for our company mantra, “Smart.
