With California at the vanguard of the transition to renewable energy, all the world’s eyes are on the ISO’s innovation, technology, and strategies for greening the grid. Public affairs and media relations are at the heart of the ISO’s mission to inform, educate, and promote the clean, reliable electric system and efficient market of the future.
Before the establishment of independent transmission operators, electricity was a matter of local concern and was regulated strictly...
Grid reliability is a 24-hour-a-day job requiring California ISO operators to assess the status of the transmission system at all times. The ISO...
Every five minutes, the ISO forecasts electrical demand and dispatches the lowest cost generator to meet demand while ensuring enough transmission capacity for delivery of power.
The ISO opened its two California control centers in 1998 as the state restructured its wholesale electricity industry. While utilities still own transmission assets, the ISO controls the routing of electrons, maximizing transmission system efficiency and generation resources, and supervising maintenance of the lines. As the nerve center for the power grid, the ISO matches buyers and sellers of electricity, facilitating over 28,000 market transactions every day to ensure enough power is on hand to meet demand.
We are honest, ethical and trustworthy with each other and stakeholders in all business dealings, reflecting the highest professional standards.
Internal and external excellence–we earn customer trust based on our quality, competence and discipline in our business dealings.

“GO15 Reliable and Sustainable Power Grids” is a voluntary initiative of the world’s 18 largest power grid operators. The members represent more than 70% of the world’s electricity demand, provide electricity to 3.4 billion consumers on the 6 continents and are responsible for integrating 2,518 GW of generation capacity into the grid, of which 21% is from renewable energy sources. GO15 investigates fundamental issues of common interest to its members and develops joint action plans addressing improvement of power system security.
ISO’s new webpage tracks emissions
The California ISO created a new webpage that monitors historical and real-time carbon emissions from resources to generate electricity for the grid’s footprint. The tool is stored as a tab on the recently redesigned Today’s Outlook page on caiso.com.
The page displays emissions with data from 2014 to present, allowing users to map annual trends, and to track progress of policies designed to reduce electric system emissions.
page, which went live in January, also has links to reports on the amounts of emissions saved in the western Energy Imbalance Market (EIM); potential impacts of a fully-integrated western states electric market, and greenhouse gas reduction goals set by the California Air Resources Board (CARB.)
Greenhouse gas emissions tracking report
This report includes an accounting of GHG emissions for the ISO balancing authority area (BAA), including ISO internal resources, net imports, and transfers from Energy Imbalance Market entities into the ISO BAA. This report also reflects the ISO assessment of GHG reductions associated with EIM operations.
