After some months in the gym of steady lifting, and others encouraging him to compete; Dexter decided to attend a local bodybuilding competition. Bodybuilding competitively, building big thighs that rubbed together and wearing small posing trunks, was not exactly enticing to Dexter. However, seeing and hearing the attention and loud cheers for the crowd favorite, Tim Davis, did catch Dexter’s attention. That day in 1990, Dexter decided he wanted to compete in a bodybuilding show. At the time he wasn’t dreaming about becoming a world famous bodybuilder, he just wanted to compete. Now, you have to try to imagine that bodybuilding in 1990, was quite different. It was the ending-era of famous legends like Arnold Schwarzenegger and Lee Haney, and the then coming of Ronnie Coleman, Flex Wheeler, and Shawn Ray. Besides movies like Conan and the Terminator, bodybuilders were wowed mostly only in magazines which was the only social media of that time. You had to be an avid fan. Dexter Jackson was 21 when he stepped on an amateur stage, 137 pounds at 5’6. As a Bantamweight, in his very first NPC competition, Dexter not only won his class, but he also won the overall. After 8 years as an amateur bodybuilder, while also being a young father and working in a mail room at Blue Cross and Blue Shield, Dexter Jackson finally turned Pro as an IFBB bodybuilder. In 1998, at the North American Championships, Dexter Jackson won the Light-heavyweight class at 187 pounds, and the Overall title. The 8 years leading up to earning his IFBB Pro status, Dexter was the only bodybuilder in history to start out as a Bantamweight, and move up, winning every weight class. In 1999, Dexter decided to make his IFBB Pro debut. Dexter went big, he competed in the 1999 Arnold Classic, at 205 pounds, against, Kevin Levrone, Vince Taylor, Milos Sarcev, Chris Cormier, and the 4-time Mr. Olympia Champion, Jay Cutler, who Dexter overthrew in 2008, to win the Mr. Olympia Sandow at the age of 39. Dexter placed 7th at the 1999 Arnold Classic. In 2002, Dexter won his first IFBB Pro show at the English Grand Prix. Dexter not only has broken records, but is still making records today.
Dexter is an IFBB/NPC Promoter of 3 shows currently and is the CEO/President of Built By Blade, Inc.
