Broadway Theatre Project was founded in 1991 by Tony award winning dancer, choreographer and director, Ann Reinking, and her associate on many shows and projects for 15 years, President and BTP Artistic Director, Debra McWaters, with the help of others. Playbill refers to BTP as “the world’s most prestigious musical theatre arts education program for high school and college students.” BTP has been associated with the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival in Region 1, since 2012. The Project is honored to have been asked to sponsor The Richard Maltby, Jr. Award for Musical Theatre Excellence each year.
The mission of this intensive three week training program is to further develop the key disciplines of musical theatre, including acting, voice, and dance and the many facets of each, as well as the critical life skills necessary to prepare students to work in the world of professional theatre.
Emphasis is not only placed on the individual art forms but also on the collaborative process and the collective creation of art. Broadway Theatre Project endeavors to provide educational excellence and mold a creative, collaborative, well-rounded, mentally well-balanced, professional, musical theatre arts performer.

Apprentices will be chaperoned by a team led by one of the top educators in the Tampa Bay area, Broadway Theatre Project’s Executive Director, Joseph Fenlon.
A small festival will be held at the end of the project for parents and families of the apprentices. This event will include performances, lectures pertaining to whether to make the move into the professional arena upon graduation from high school or to continue one’s studies in a university or at a conservatory, the college selection process, demonstrations of what the apprentices have experienced during their three week tenure at Broadway Theatre Project, Q&A sessions with the faculty, informal discussions on topics such as careers steeped in musical theatre but not located on Broadway. An example of this would be life on the high seas as more and more audiences on cruise lines desire Broadway entertainment and given the few jobs on Broadway and the high quality of these Broadway shows on several specific cruise lines, this has become an extremely popular career path for young performers.
This year’s end-of-Project Summer Festival will be unlike any we’ve had in the past. For the first time in Project history, we are planning an original production for the Summer Festival this year which promises to be a collaborative experience that is going to make its mark in our theatrical orbit!
