Playing a critical role in the war, the Airfield was the training base where all of the Army Air Force’s flight crews learned to use radar — a then brand new technology. The Civil Air Patrol (CAP), founded December 1, 1941, is the volunteer nonprofit civilian auxiliary of the United States Air Force. CAP has three missions: Emergency Services, Aerospace Education, and Cadet Programs. CAP handles 90 percent of inland search and rescue missions. CAP has over 60,000 members and a fleet of 550 single-engine aircraft nationwide. CAP has a Cessna 172 based at Boca Raton Airport (BCT), where the CAP Boca Raton Composite squadron meets in Bldg. 5, Hanger 1A at 6:30pm on Tuesday evenings. The squadron, with a membership of 50 adults and cadets, is a key player in Florida’s search and rescue missions including finding downed aircraft, rescuing boaters off-shore, aerial surveillance, and hurricane and flood relief efforts.
