Bion Cantorum performs three annual concerts at First Presbyterian Church, 2230 Hariet Street, Port Charlotte, Florida. Regular weekly rehearsals are held in the choir room at the church, beginning each Monday night during season from 6:45 pm to 9:00 pm.
Bion translates from Japanese as “beautiful sound”, added to Cantorum to form Bion Cantorum which translates to Singers of Beautiful Sound. The concept of developing a choral group dedicated to providing beautiful, exciting music to area residents and to provide the opportunity of these residents to participate in a mixed community chorus was a seed planted and encouraged by Maestro T. Francis Wada (former Conductor of the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra) during a conversation with two of the founding members of Bion Cantorum, Ray and Joan Byron.
Bion Cantorum's Executive Board chose Roy W. Engler, former Artistic Director of the Suncoast Chorale, to be Bion's Artistic Director because of his innate ability to produce great sounds from singers. As Maestro Wada stated, “he is a magnificent choral craftsman.”
Concerts by Bion Cantorum are open to the public. Our home performance venue is First Presbyterian Church, 2230 Hariet Street, Port Charlotte, FL 33952.
