Big Island Bowls was created by myself (Kelly Hazouri), and my partner (Brendan Schneck). We were best friends at Flagler College; then ended up together years after we graduated. This is our story of taking the road less traveled, discovering our authentic selves and following our bliss! It was both life changing & liberating for the couple to live out of a backpack. Working long hours in the field and then spending long weekends exploring the natural beauty of the islands. While Brendan & Kelly were embracing this new soul quenching lifestyle, they also adopted an array of healthy practices. Instantly falling in love with both the Hawaiian culture and the cuisine, both of which would later become the foundation of their business. “We are not just selling food but trying to help build a community.”-Brendan Schneck Sambazon is a tribe of conscious individuals looking to make the world a better place. By teaming up with Sambazon we believe that we too can help promote the core values of living in a sustainable world. “As pioneers of nutrition, bringers of amazing taste, and believers of higher consciousness, we committed our lives to preserving the Amazon rainforest. We know that people get to vote with their dollars these days and we celebrate the fact that caring about what you consume is more important than ever. We take this to every product we make, ensuring our beliefs are part of every berry. We believe in protecting and preserving the environment, in providing healthy and uncompromised nutrition to the world, and to believing in the power of positive change.” Sustainability’s a holistic, top to bottom sort of situation. We know there are a lot of moving parts coming together to make our Acai, but we never compromise the core of who we are just to bring a juice to market. We always consider the livelihoods of the people that make us possible, the health of the plants we harvest, and the quality of the product we produce. We will always be organic, fair trade, and non-GMO because there’s really no other way to be.” When we came to the Amazon, we fell in love. We knew we had to protect it, but wanted to do it in a way that lasts. After tasting açai for the first time, we realized that if we could make a product from the Amazon economically beneficial, the Amazon itself would become valuable enough (in the eyes of businesses and governments) to preserve. There’s no doubt the Amazon’s one of those special places on earth – it holds nearly a third of the planet’s biodiversity – but it’s more than just that. It’s the people. Because we hand-harvest all our açai, we’re able to provide over 10,000 jobs for locals, to preserve countless acres of rainforest, and to spread the good vibes of this little purple berry to the world.” Big Island Bowls shares Sambazon’s top 7 guidlines: We make healthy products for a better you and a better planet. A ballsy leap of faith lol. We would be working for a company called Pacific Quest, which was a gardening therapy program for at risk youth.
