I started my writing career when I was a development & production executive at New Line Cinema. While participating in the development process of a film, I realized one of my favorite steps was delivering story notes. Summarizing what worked and didn’t work about the script and then expanding on it – suggesting new plot ideas, tweaking dialogue, enhancing characters. I received quite a bit of positive feedback from some big deal writers and directors on these notes (and one super famous actor), and I soon realized that writing might be my thing. So, I started contributing to some small blogs in my “free time” (and, as all “D-girls” do, I wrote a screenplay…about sorority girls…don’t even ask).
When I moved to Miami, I was lucky enough to score a regular contributing gig at Ocean Drive Magazine, the most elite publication in the city. During this time, I also did some marketing work for Conde Nast Publications – writing marketing proposals for VOGUE, Conde Nast Traveler, Bon Appetit and more. I began to learn about the business/journalism crossover, i.e. copywriting, and enjoyed that work immensely. I also spent time working for a PR agency, and ended up writing every press release for the company (apparently people hate doing that) as well as launching social media campaigns for many of our clients.
Finally, about five years ago, I switched to full-time freelance journalism and copywriting. I love the mix. I’ve been able to work with amazing clients on the business and copywriting side such as NetJets and Starwood Hotels, while expanding my journalism portfolio, contributing to publications like The Daily Meal (free dinners!), W Magazine, Lifestyle Magazines, and About.com.
I find that I get new ideas and gain access to important people and influential audiences through my journalism. That access lends itself to increased productivity and fresh concepts that I use in my copywriting.
