About Basekamp BASEKAMP BASEKAMP BASEKAMP group ran a collaborative art research center, residency program, and exhibition program by the same name in Philadelphia. The group has since gone mobile, making temporary camps in various locations to invite anyone interested in a joint experiment to develop new models of relations within overlapping art communities. The goal is Organization Without Hierarchy, Attribution Without Ownership, and Value Without Capital. Resulting collaborations appear in non-art contexts, online, in artist-run spaces, institutional venues–or any channel to help further our collective efforts. In the spirit of Occupy Wall Street and the General Assembly, we have no guests this week – or really we are all guests This week we are asking people from cities who are or want to be involved in the wider #occupy movement to connect with us and each other, share strategies, reports and ideas. For more info, please read our Critical Practice has invited Basekamp to be a “stall holder” in its upcoming “ Exchange, Basekamp is invited an organizational meeting on Tuesday 25th of September, 1-2 pm, in The Truth is Concrete’s Workshop Room. Critical Practice will introduce the “technology” of the , as the first in a new series of participatory enquiries into collective initiatives, Basekamp will be hosting a Skype chat with Elysa Lozano and Khalil Robinson about the new project space they will soon be opening in Bushwick, Brooklyn, called , which is itself committed to the dissemination of radical-left ideas and organizing. The mission of the space is to help spread ideas and practices within the broader community and provide a constructive environment where people can get together and organize outside of traditional activist and educational institutions. The hope is to find ways to give political theory more traction in the broader community and amongst people who may never have grappled with theoretical issues at any formal level but who may find it useful in structuring the practical politics of their living situations. As the founders put it, will help “establish a framework where creative modes of sharing will be encouraged, with the goal of spreading these modes beyond the confines of the space itself. We intend to establish a sociopolitical model in New York City where participants can create projects that are expansive and creative.” Modelled after Vidéogazette’s broadcasting studio “Agora”, The Whole World is Watching transforms the Magasin’s auditorium into an exhibition space and brings together archival video work by Pierre Bismuth, Natalie Bookchin, Richard Serra, Vidéogazette and new commissions by the Journal of Aesthetics and Protest, Pierre Musso, Gail Pickering, and The Public School Philadelphia. Taking its title from the 1968 anti-war demonstrations outside the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, The Whole World is Watching  explores Vidéogazette’s desire for social transformation accompanying 1970’s video innovations along with the forms of control that paradoxically resulted from the democratization of technological equipment.  Occupy Wall Street has captured the attention of the world. Since its inception on September 17th, it has spread from the founding occupation at Liberty Plaza in New York City to thousands of cities and countless minds across the globe. This expansion has carried with it principles of participation, inclusivity, and consensus. Application of these principles have helped result in a “leaderless” movement - one where we rely primarily on process, rather than charismatic individuals, to drive us forward. ) project is trying to make that leap. We are building a new web platform that combines community organizing techniques and ideas, lessons and patterns from social networks, web standards and best practices, all together with the very real ecosystem of Occupy itself: occupations is very much an ongoing project, and we are very interested in bringing more people into our process. On Skype (skypename: ‘basekamp’). is a semiannual conference for independent visual arts organizers working at the crossroads of creative administration and studio practice. This conference is open to people engaged in the pragmatic realities and imaginative possibilities of organizing exhibitions, re-granting programs, publications, residencies, public programs, platforms for projects, and a variety of other programming that challenges traditional formats for the production and reception of art at the grassroots level. These include, but are not limited to, artist-run exhibition spaces, independent programming series, unconventional residency programs, and artist-run pedagogical experiments. ’s audience included artists, scholars, writers, thinkers, and doers interested in any or all of the above. The residency was populated by artists, planners, and writers from a diversity of practices and cities who decided to collaborate together in some way during the first part of the residency. The conference was then free to attend and also recorded and broadcast on Livestream. Audience members were encouraged to donate their notes from the conference presentations to help create a collaboratively written publication. In addition, three keynote speakers (who should be familiar to regular Basekamp potluck attendees) made presentations of their work on the first evening and helped to lead open discussions the second conference day. The keynote presenters were Gregory Sholette, Marisa Jahn, and Temporary Services. Add your voice on Skype (skypename: ‘basekamp’) If you prefer text chat, we are also on
