Key design and development strategies that support this initiative include: solar energy, water efficiency, native plants and materials, sustainable local materials, tree preservation and relocation, and Florida Green Building standards. With nature on all sides and imagination at every turn, Babcock Ranch provides unlimited opportunities for personal growth. Production of solar energy at a utility scale is a key part of Babcock Ranch’s commitment to sustainability. In partnership with Florida Power & Light Company (FPL), Babcock Ranch donated 440 acres of land for a 74.5 mw solar facility to ensure the net production of clean, renewable energy exceeds the total amount the town will consume. This facility is owned and operated by FPL. From building construction and orientation to street design, Babcock Ranch is designed to better withstand the ever-changing weather patterns Florida brings. Homes and businesses are required to include both aesthetic and operable storm shutters or impact glass as well as increased wind speed construction standards that are 20mph over the current Florida Building code. Focused on Making Life Fun What are we doing for the environment? Energy efficiency and renewable energy production are key to achieving our goal of making Babcock Ranch the most sustainable town in Florida. By donating 440 acres of land and partnering with FPL to do renewable energy at a utility scale we’ve empowered homeowners to minimize their environmental footprint – with no additional cost. Use of resources available right on the property is another part of the sustainability story. On-site mining operations has provided fill and road aggregate. On-site farming will deliver produce – and provide space for community farming plots where residents can grow their own. And sod is available from our community sod farm. At Babcock Ranch we’re making it easier than ever to leave your car at home. Starting with the very design and layout of Babcock Ranch, we’ve put shopping, schools, services within easy reach via a network of expansive trails for walking and biking. Our innovative internal transportation embraces advanced and developing technologies to provide environmentally-friendly ways to get around town that are more convenient and affordable than driving your own car. In addition to electric-powered, self-driving shuttles running along set routes, Babcock Ranch is an early implementation site for on-demand self-driving cars that you can schedule with an app on your smart phone. The Babcock Ranch FPL Solar Energy Center is located slightly north on the Babcock Ranch property. It provides 74.5 megawatts of solar capacity and is located on a total of 440 acres. With 343,000 solar panels, the FPL Babcock Ranch Solar Energy Center provides power to the entire town of Babcock and surrounding areas. To learn more, we encourage you to check out our On July 31, 2006, Kitson & Partners closed on the purchase of the 91,000-acre ranch from the Babcock family and then sold 73,000 acres to the state for permanent preservation. It was the largest land preservation deal in all of Florida’s history. Our plans for Babcock Ranch were to prove that smart growth and preservation can work together. In 2005 and 2006, Florida was growing at an unprecedented rate. Population growth rates hovered around 17% and incredible demand drove real estate prices through the roof. With homes selling as fast as they were built, there wasn’t much incentive for change. Smart growth in Florida was key, which we knew then and we know now. The real estate market plunged in 2007 and it delayed our timeline. But through it all, the vision for Babcock Ranch never wavered.
