The Appraisal Institute Education Trust has 501(c)(3) status with the IRS. Any person or organization that make contributions (money or property) to a 501(c)(3) organization are able to claim deductions for their donations on the their federal income tax under section 170 of the Internal Revenue Code. The Appraisal Institute Relief Foundation (AIRF) is a not-for-profit organization that provides emergency financial assistance to those who have experienced a disaster or emergency that has left the recipient in a state of financial, physical or emotional distress. AIRF has provided assistance for the following disasters: The majority of Appraisal Institute professionals are practicing real estate appraisers and property analysts who provide valuation-related services to such clients as mortgage lenders, financial institutions, government agencies, attorneys and financial planners as well as homeowners and other individual consumers. Appraisal Institute Designated members have met rigorous requirements relating to education, testing, experience and demonstration of knowledge, understanding and ability. Those individuals holding the Appraisal Institute’s MAI and SRPA designations are experienced in commercial valuation, including industrial, retail and multifamily properties. Those holding the SRA designation are experienced in residential valuation. The AI-GRS designation is held by professionals who can provide reviews of appraisals of a wide range of property types, including commercial, industrial, agricultural, residential, vacant land and others. The AI-RRS designation is held by professionals who can provide reviews of residential appraisals.All Appraisal Institute professionals adhere to a strictly enforced Code of Professional Ethics and Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice. Role of the Appraisal Institute For more than 85 years, the Appraisal Institute has been the world’s leading organization of professional real estate appraisers. The organization has led the way in fostering and promoting the highest standards of practice through its designation programs, peer review process, education, research and publishing endeavors. Valuation professionals within the Appraisal Institute form a network of Professionals Providing Real Estate Solutions® throughout the United States and abroad. Because they have met rigorous requirements relating to education and experience, appraisers holding the Appraisal Institute’s MAI, SRPA and/or SRA membership designations have long been respected by courts, government agencies, lenders, corporations and others seeking real estate appraisal services. The AI-GRS and AI-RRS review designations have recently been created in response to the growing and critically important role that appraisal review plays in risk management and mitigation for many clients/users of appraisal services. A cornerstone upon which the Appraisal Institute was built is that every participating individual agrees to conduct his or her professional activities in accordance with the Appraisal Institute’s Code of Professional Ethics and Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice. The Appraisal Institute also serves as a resource for the profession in other ways, including its Y.T. and Louise Lee Lum Library, InfoExchange and job search services. Through its James L. Murrett, MAI, SRA, of Hamburg, New York, is the 2018 president of the Appraisal Institute. He will serve as immediate past president in 2019. He serves this year as chair of the organization’s Executive Committee and chairs its policy-setting Board of Directors. Murrett has served on the Appraisal Institute’s national Board of Directors and Strategic Planning Committee and as chair of the Finance Committee, in addition to many chapter roles, including as president of the Upstate New York Chapter. He also has been treasurer and a member of the Board of Directors of the International Center for Valuation Certification, an affiliate of the Appraisal Institute. He received the 2014 Appraisal Institute Edward W. Adams, SRA, Outstanding Board Service Award and the 2008 President’s Award, which is presented by the Upstate New York Chapter of the Appraisal Institute for ongoing commitment, dedication and service to the chapter and the profession. Murrett received a bachelor’s degree in business management from Walsh University, in Canton, Ohio. Stephen S. Wagner, MAI, SRA, AI-GRS, of West Lafayette, Indiana, is the 2018 president-elect of the Appraisal Institute. He will serve as president in 2019 and immediate past president in 2020. He also will serve on the organization’s Executive Committee and on its policy-setting Board of Directors.   Wagner served as Appraisal Institute vice president in 2017. His one-year term as president-elect will be followed by one year each as president in 2019 and immediate past president in 2020. He also will continue to serve on the Appraisal Institute’s Executive Committee and on its policy-setting Board of Directors for the next three years. Wagner has served on the Appraisal Institute Board of Directors and as vice chair of the Professional Standards and Guidance Committee. He is a past chair of the Demonstration Report Writing Panel, has served on the Admissions Designations and Qualifications Committee and has been involved in the development of the General Review courses and two Capstone case studies. He also teaches general qualifying education and advanced-level courses and seminars for the Appraisal Institute.
