By the end of Medical School Dr. Espaillat decided to specialize in Psychiatry because he felt a vocation for the field. Although he found many medical specialties enjoyable, challenging, and interesting; he found Psychiatry amazing. He was always deeply impressed by the pressure that mental health conditions can exert upon individuals, families, and societies. He has also been impressed by the strength, courage, and love portrayed by his patients. Dr. Espaillat’s most valued codes of ethic are “First Do No Harm” and “Beneficence”. Dr. Espaillat gets fulfillment from the great warmth he feels from interacting with patients and their families and from doing his best to try to be a force for growth and improvement in their lives. Dr. Espaillat completed a Bachelor of Science in Biology from the University of Puerto Rico, Mayaguez Campus. He received his degree of Medical Doctor from Ponce School of Medicine in Ponce, Puerto Rico and finished his Residency Training in General Psychiatry from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, Newark Campus; today known as Rutgers School of Biomedical and Health Sciences. From there he went on to complete Fellowship Training in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, DC. Dr. Espaillat has been licensed and worked in New Jersey, Washington DC, Maryland, Puerto Rico, California, Oregon, and Florida. He also has military experience having served in the Army Reserve and in the Puerto Rico Army National Guard. Dr. Espaillat has provided services as a Psychiatrist to the US Department of Defense and the Veterans Administration. Current active licenses are California and Florida.
