Prosperity was spurring growth in Atlanta, which was on its way to becoming the international city of the south. But, growth and prosperity were slower in arriving in rural north Georgia. Only a few men realized that a new source of opportunity … the fully integrated poultry industry… was on its way. It was 1949 when he founded North Georgia Rendering Company. He focused on two challenges: Handling the ever-increasing volumes of by-products generated by the poultry processing plants and meeting the growing need for high quality, cost effective protein feed supplements. Leland Bagwell knew that until these challenges were faced and met, the poultry industry could never reach it’s full potential. In its first year, North Georgia Rendering Company processed 150 thousand pounds of allied poultry products per week, and back then that was an impressive number. Today, however, American Proteins, Inc., the outgrowth of North Georgia Rendering, processes that same 150 thousand pounds in less than 15 minutes. From its state of the art environmentally sound plants located in Alma, Cumming and Cuthbert Georgia, and Hanceville, Alabama, American Proteins is a world leader in poultry protein and fat sales and new product development. AMERICAN PROTEINS, INC. As far back as AD 130 to 200 the process of recycling animal by-products was being used to produce soap as a means for cleansing the body. Later, during the times of the Roman Empire, soap was first recognized as a product that could be used to clean laundry. Next came the process of making wax for candles from recycled animal by-products which became very popular in Europe in the 13th century. By the 19th century the practice of recycling animal by-products would be called rendering. As the wheels of the Industrial Revolution began to turn in the United States, rendering and soap manufacturing progressed together. Today, rendering in the United States has grown to an industry processing and converting over 54 billion pounds of raw material into animal proteins, fat and many other useful products. One of the largest rendering companies in the world is located here in Cumming, Georgia. This company, American Proteins, Inc., was established in 1949 by Leland Bagwell. Mr. Bagwell created the business to service a fast-growing poultry industry; he started with only a handful of local producers making their by-products into feed for chickens. Today, American Proteins, Inc. and its owner Tommy Bagwell operate four poultry by-product conversion plants located in Georgia and Alabama. Currently, about 40% of every chicken processed in the South ends up as a by-product after being re-processed by American Proteins, Inc. AMERICAN PROTEINS, INC. Each American Proteins, Inc. rendering plant has a designated fleet to insure fresh and timely deliveries of raw materials. Our fleets deliver over four hundred truckloads of raw material each day to our plants. That is more than 85,000,000 pounds a week of an otherwise waste product.
