ALAQUA ANIMAL REFUGE, INC., FREEPORT

Your calls and comments are very important to us and we look forward to hearing from you. Please remember that we operated with a small staff and received hundreds of calls each day, making it difficult to reach us at times. We encourage filling out the form below for any inquiries, comments, and questions you may have. Mission Statement: Alaqua Animal Refuge believes that every abused, neglected and homeless animal deserves a second chance. Our private, nonprofit animal sanctuary is committed to serving the Emerald Coast as: the premier no-kill refuge, providing protection, shelter and care to animals in need; a full-service animal adoption center; and a peaceful, proactive animal welfare advocate through educational outreach and community programs. Alaqua Animal Refuge is a no-kill facility founded in 2007 and located on a sprawling and bucolic 10-acre farm in Freeport, FL. The refuge is located about 20 minutes north of the Emerald Coast’s sugary white beaches, which are among some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. While there are countless animals who are lucky to live amongst the stunning blue-green gulf and enjoy the high quality of life that our area has to offer, thousands of animals are being neglected and abused, or paddling along the margins of lonely streets, looking in vain for the owners who once loved but later abandoned them. Alaqua has come a long way in all aspects of operation, initially providing shelter to only a handful of dogs, cats and other animals and requiring only a few staff members to work to find these animals permanent, loving homes. But the shelter has since grown and expanded into a refuge that provides respite for over 250 animals at any given time. Since its founding year, Alaqua staff and volunteers have helped find homes for more than 15,000 animals, with up to 100 adoptions completed each month. Caring for and finding loving homes for animals only scratches the surface of what Alaqua Animal Refuge does for its community. Alaqua has developed multiple programs that serve members of our community in all walks of life, from young children with developmental delays and special needs to senior citizens who can benefit from the companionship of one of our animals. We work hard to keep these programs running and are rewarded by witnessing the lives that are changed. Alaqua prides itself in providing only the best quality living conditions for its animals. The cats and kittens spend their days roaming freely in their ‘loft apartments’ fully equipped with fans and air conditioning, while the dogs and puppies enjoy their own private enclosures complete with a spacious outdoor run where they can be found enthusiastically greeting the staff and visitors. The compound also includes an equine center, two quarantine buildings and an infirmary – where animals rescued from abusive homes and overcrowded shelters are nursed back to health under the watchful eyes of the staff veterinarian. The monthly operational costs here at Alaqua amount to nearly $80,000 – yes, that’s $80,000 a month. As a non-profit organization, we operate solely on funds that are raised through donations and fund raising events. We are fortunate to have a community of supporters and organizations with giving hearts that are ever willing to help raise awareness and show their support through donations and fund raising events. We have a family of staff and volunteers here at Alaqua that are constantly beating the path of that extra mile and putting in countless hours throughout the year in fund raising efforts. We are thankful for every giving heart that has helped us along the way Our dreams just keep getting bigger here at Alaqua Animal Refuge, as we prepare to move to a much bigger, 100-acre facility here in Freeport. This move will enable us to provide shelter to even more animals as well as allow room for growth with our educational outreach and community programs, such as our Equine Interactions program. We believe that no dream is too big when it comes to saving the lives of innocent animals. And while we continue to grow and develop, Alaqua will adhere to its guiding purpose: to give neglected, lost and abandoned animals a second chance at life. Everyone needs a buddy and our goal is to help you find yours. Laurie Hood is the visionary behind Alaqua Animal Refuge. She was born and raised in Louisiana and graduated from LSU with a degree in Marketing. Hood has drawn on her business background to create a non-profit that functions for success. Her prior professional experience includes operating an international magazine in south Florida for eight years and serving as marketing director for the Gorlin Companies, a Destin, Fla.-based firm that launched medical and drug companies, including several that have become successful publicly traded ventures. In 2007 Laurie discovered that countless animals were being euthanized due to the lack of a no-kill shelter in Walton County. She couldn’t reconcile this with her natural passion for animals, so she started Alaqua Animal Refuge. We invite you to visit us at Alaqua—a place where dreams come true, not only for the animals at our facility but also for all people who are dedicated to its mission. Alaqua Animal Refuge is a place of healing, where animals who have been victims of abuse and neglect come to mend their broken bodies and spirits. At our Refuge, these animals will find solitude and loving hands to care for them. It is a place where school children can come out and call each animal by their name, and they leave with a desire to be a voice for the animals at our facility. For the animals who pass through our gates, Alaqua Animal Refuge becomes what can only be described as “Heaven on Earth.” A place to call home, loving hands to care for them, and a hope for a better future – those are all things that we provide for each animal that comes to our refuge.
