Parent training provided and encouraged Laura has conducted and presented her research on implementation of behavioral strategies in preschool settings, clinics, and by family members at the local, state and national conferences. She provides training for and is competent in the following training programs: Helping Our Toddlers, Developing Our Children’s Skills The backbone of this program is to teach caregivers a problem-solving method to figure out the function or the “why” of children’s problem behaviors. Once we figure out the “why” we can teach specific prevention strategies and techniques for modifying the consequences of a child’s behavior to either strengthen or weaken the behavior. Another of the main strategies is to help adults realize that a lot of the time children use problem behaviors because they don’t have the skills or know how to do more appropriate behaviors. So our job as adults is to specifically TEACH kids the behaviors we want them to do, just like we would with a sport or an academic skill, most children need to be taught behaviors like waiting and sharing.
