Upon returning to Hong Kong, Dr. Poon taught courses on machine vision and pattern recognition and led the university R&D team on implementing algorithms in machine vision products at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) between 1990-1997.
Dr. Poon immigrated to Canada in 1997 and was an Adjunct Assistant Professor at the University of Waterloo between 1997 - 2001. During this time, Dr. Poon also became a consultant with ASM Pacific Technology, the world's largest assembly and packaging equipment supplier for the semiconductor and LED industries between 1997 - 2008. With years of direct and practical experience in machine vision and image processing algorithm and software development in manufacturing and object identification and tracking in military applications, Dr. Poon started Canavision in 2002 and Abraham Innovation Systems Inc in 2011. He saw a need for pattern recognition, image processing techniques, and artificial intelligence solutions for quality controls in the manufacturing industries. Together with the software and management company, Dr. Poon has deployed over 200 machine vision systems in North America and in other parts of the world, serving large companies across diverse industries.
