In 1981, Dr. Skuban graduated with a degree in History and Philosophy (magna cum laude) from FAU. However, having always been the one in her family to study and apply alternative and complementary medicine, her journey as a healer began when she became a childbirth educator after the birth of her son. In the pregnancy and birth experience the certain truth of the connection between body and mind was driven home to her. She taught childbirth classes privately for several area hospitals and in outreach programs for birth mothers in the adoption process, but as her children grew she continued studying alternatives to drugs and surgery. Her wealth of knowledge aided in preventing her son from undergoing surgery for ear aches and brought her daughter out of a downward spiral of failing health that started with unnecessary antibiotics given in infancy. It is interesting, maybe even amusing, how Dr. Skuban came to be an acupuncture physician. She claims it is all due to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles! Her son wanted to study karate to be like the Ninja Turtles. Wanting to stay in shape herself, she took up Taekwondo (at Better Families Through Taekwondo) and was about to get her black belt when she became pregnant with her 3rd child. Despite the pregnancy she continued to pursue the Black Belt and received it shortly after giving birth, despite the consequences of severe back pain. After trying everything western medicine had to offer for her pain she finally tried acupuncture on the advice of her Sensei. The acupuncture cured her back pain and surprisingly also her migraines that she had suffered from since she was 13 years old. She was so impressed by this that when her baby was ready for school she studied acupuncture so that she could help others as she had been helped. A New Leaf Acupuncture
