A Healthier Wei
Within four weeks, we could see a big difference. Since implementing these very simple changes, Ally has not had a single cough attack. This is nothing short of miraculous to us because up to this point she had been episodic on almost a monthly basis. We’d been dealing with this practically her whole life, so we are just amazed by how different life with our daughter is now.
After seeing many doctors who couldn’t help us, we learned to keep seeking answers. That’s how we finally found Dr. Wei, and that’s how we finally got our son well.
So excited to find your website and I just ordered your book! My daughter is 16 months old and we have been dealing with chronic cough, reflux, runny nose, etc. since she was 3 weeks old. We are now dealing with constipation as well. She still breastfeeds before bed and in middle of the night when she wakes up coughing (frequently). Do you think that the breast milk is making it worse? It has been the only thing I have found to comfort her and help her to stop coughing.
As loving as you are in providing her with breast milk before bed and in the middle of the night, I highly recommend you consider being good to yourself, stop nursing her at night and I believe she will likely stop coughing as it is likely due to undigested stomach content coming back up. If your daughter is healthy and not underweight, I am pretty sure she is smart and has you trained to continue the nursing in the middle of the night. There is nothing wrong with wanting to be with mommy and being comforted. However, this is the difficult age when you may need to exercise “tough love” and train her by gently reassuring her even if she wakes and then having her get used to soothing herself back to sleep somehow without needing to nurse. Check out my blog on “When Toddlers Wake At Night”. Sleep training is really difficult, almost as hard as denying her the comfort of nursing her. You will have to decide when it is the right time to do so with her. I really encourage families to stop feeding toddlers at least 90 minutes before bed, water is fine. This helps to make sure they are going to sleep on a as empty of stomach as possible, which generally improves sleep. Good luck to you.
I received your book and read it in one night because I need help with both of my kids. My two year old son is constantly sick. He has a cold (runny nose, congestion, wet cough, light fever) at least twice a month. He is miserable. He has also had a runny nose for about 3 months straight now. After countless trips to the pediatrician, I took him to an allergist for testing. They did find out he was allergic to a few things and put him on a daily allergy medication; however, it is not helping at all. He still has a constant runny nose and he is always sick. I have a 6 month old that has been having the same issues for the past month now also. I don’t know what to do. What do you think would help? I would like to cut out all dairy and limit sugar, but how to I do that when my kids both are at daycare and my two year old is going to want what the other kids eat. I appreciate any advice you can give me.
What you are going through is very typical for the families and young children that I see almost daily in my office. I can certainly understand the challenges of trying to control your children’s diet and be thoughtful about what they are eating and drinking when you work and they spend most of their waking day at daycare. First of all, I need to make sure your son was born full term and otherwise healthy, if not, please consult with your pediatrician as I really can not be giving you advice if your child has any underlying medical issues. A 2 yr old does not need more than 14-16oz of 2% milk daily, but I believe they can have even less if their diet includes yogurt and cheese. Your child truly can get calcium through fortified soy milk and orange juice, and most cereals are fortified with calcium as well. Dark leafy greens have calcium also. I would consider a trial of no dairy, in case he is lactose intolerant, in which case allergy test does not help. Please read my blogs and you will find out on allergy testing and food issues. You will have to talk to daycare and consider providing soymilk that they can give to your 2 yr old instead of cow’s milk. You can also insist you want him to have water instead, with meals. Make sure that his lunch, and even breakfast, is not always just grilled cheese, mac n’cheese, pizza, etc, and if need be, you may have to pack his lunch. You can reduce his sugar intake by not buying Capri Sun or any pouched drinks as they are high in sugar, and avoid juice boxes, which while convenient, and high in sugar as well. He can enjoy gold fish crackers, ritz crackers, and other crackers, but beware of fruit snacks, and many items that are high in sugar. I personally never buy cheese sticks, as they are highly processed. I would try giving your 2 yr old water with dinner and water after, and avoid snacking after dinner. Avoid yogurt in a tube, and always read food labels, many of the items that are “good” for us are high in sugar.
