A Chance to Run is a nonprofit community service foundation aiming to get kids active and interested in the sport of Track and Field. The organization was founded by Alexis Behne Sharma, a student at Pine View School, in the summer of 2014. It started with 32 campers and doubled the number of middle and high school kids the following year to 65. The campers learn about different events from sprint and mid-distance races to the various field events like long jump and shot put. “My goal is to expand the program to provide opportunities throughout the Sarasota and Manatee county area for kids to come out and try Track & Field as a sport.” shares Alexis. “Running is fun and my camp allows middle & high school kids to try a new sport or event without pressure. We work hard but have a blast!” she further comments. The lead coach, Coach Paul Williams, is local trainer with more than 20 years of experience and has worked with the camp for the past two years. “With participation in youth sports declining due to budget cuts and parent’s working longer hours to make ends meet, programs like A Chance to Run are key in our community to give students an opportunity to be more physically active.” remarked Coach Paul Williams.
