I started creating my base of contacts in November 1996 when I left my position as Director of M&A at a wireless telecom company and started working for myself. Each week since then I have added 3-5 new contacts. These are many of the same business leaders, lenders and investors who transition from one Internet service industry to the next as the Internet continually evolves. Only some of the deals on your list are your sellside clients, why? Half of what I do is help people organize and sell their companies … hence their deal gets put on the list. The other half of what I do is work for 102 (as of Jan 2014) buyside clients helping them find, analyze and acquire various Internet service companies (and assets) around the world. Obviously not all of the buyside clients are active at the same time. Regarding my fee, if any buyer acquires one of my sellside clients then only the seller pays my fee. If any buyer acquires any deal on the list that is not one of my sellside clients, the buyer would pay my fee. (I never get paid by both parties in the same transaction.) While we are experts in financing, factoring and back office accounting services, we’re not experts in Internet mergers and acquisitions … so we retained Eric Furlow to sell one of our company investments in the cloud hosting industry. The entire divestiture process went very smooth and evolved exactly as Eric originally presented. What stood out to us during the entire process was the sheer size of the prospective buyer pool that Eric gathered within the first month. The transaction couldn’t have gone better.
