In 1999, a shoe box at Fairmeadow Farm in Ocala, held the names and addresses of sheep producers known by Carol Postley. It was the names in that shoe box that began the Meat Sheep Alliance of Florida (MSA). The MSA, founded by Carol Postley, began as a small group of sheep producers wanting to network and share information on what works, and what doesn’t work in the business of raising sheep in Florida. Soon thereafter, Sherry Lee of Linden Hollow Sheep Farm in St. Cloud, started an MSA Yahoo Group, open to all, that was very active in sharing health tips and providing a much needed communication system between producers. The goal has been education from the start, and we continue in that tradition today. Meetings in the spring and fall of each year provide an opportunity to catch up with fellow producers, learn the newest information, and enjoy a delicious lamb lunch together. 10 AM – 12PM Famacha/Parasite Control – Sally Mangra, Certified Famacha Instructor Parasites are our biggest threat, and there is new information on deworming strategies, and a product for effective coccidiosis control. Beginning Shepherd Workshops are beneficial for all producers – beginners and experienced. There are always new and improved practices, and fellow shepherds to meet and enjoy. Everyone goes home with a bit of helpful information, so make plans to join us for an eventful day of eating, learning, and sharing. Ideas on workshops are always welcome.
